Interesting conversation with a teacher today who is outraged that she is being evaluated this year.
She lied to me & told me that she had been evaluated last year, so contractually she shouldn't be evaluated this year.
However, she wasn't really evaluated and hasn't been evaluated for more than a few years. She's upset because of the deal that she thought she had with her previous principal.
The deal has kind of fallen through & the new principal really doesn't care about the deal.
She's out of luck & wanted me go to battle for her.
I had to tell her that there was nothing contractually that I could do. There is no violation of the contract. She has to be evaluated this year.
She wasn't happy.
I told her that I'm just doing my job. My job is to protect her rights under the contract. The contract calls for an evaluation every other year.
Despite what some may think, the contract protects both the teacher and the district.

I don't get it. I don't really adore being evaluated, but I find the process valuable. I always learn something and my evaluator gets to see me in action. I think that is important.
Wow. The first three years you are evaluated twice a year. After that, we are evaluated every year. And you get evaluated every other year?
in the first two years, teachers are evaluated both years. Once they are "permanent status," it's every other year in our district. That's why I think it's insane that this teacher was so upset by this.
We get evaluated every year, even those of us who have been teaching for 31 years. *ahem* This new admin likes to drop in to observe for 5-10 minutes periodically, which is OK with me. I'm proud of what I do.
As someone who recently got a teaching credential I am used to being in a classroom with other people and would be happy to be evaluated at least yearly and I think it should be with no notice.
You shouldn't have to be warned in order to be bringing your A game.
I wish everyone in administration was as diligent as you are.
Sounds like one of "those teachers" who tend to give us all a bad name...
Here non-tenured teachers are observed/evaluated 4 times a year, tenured (after two complete years) teachers are 2 times a year.
Does this teacher also take into consideration the (unofficial, but also reputation-building) observations by paraprofessionals assisting special needs students, professionals from outside agencies who are observing students who need to be identified, wrap-around services, parent visitation day (once a year for us) and grandparent visitation day (also once a year)? If I was "keeping score" of these, I'd say I'm close to 3-5 observations every week!!
As Jenn and Margaret have said, and I wholeheartedly agree, a PROFESSIONAL should be proud of what is happening in their classroom, because they are always bringing their A game!
I am never threatened by evaluations, but I have also never been unfairly evaluated. I don't think teachers should be threatened by these methods of "checking in". Your job is to go to bat for her if the evaluation process is being abused, which hopefully it isn't. I'm with you - she should relax.
Wow its a great article! The sounds like yummy! Lovely to find.
