political clout as a public employee

(when typing public you need to make sure to include that "l"!)

Are you paying attention to the news? It appears that as a result of winning a lot of major races this past November, the Republicans & the tea partiers (who are one in the same as far I am concerned) are hell-bent on making unions pay.

In Wisconsin, the governor is seeking to completely eliminate collective bargaining rights. In Ohio, collective bargaining rights for teachers would be limited. Tennesse is also looking to eliminate collective bargaining for its teachers.

In various readings that I've seen in blogs, editorials, and the like, seem to suggest that public unions have a lot of political clout. This political clout, the argument goes, has led to "outrageous" salaries & benefits.

So, where's my outrageous benefits? Currently, I pay over $500 per month for my families health benefits. Our co-pays are between $15 to 20 per visit. For those doing the math, that's over $5,000 per year & each year this amount increases because our district has a cap on the amount it pays. All increases are picked up by employees.

So, where's my outrageous pay? I've not received any type of raise for over six years. In fact, for many years, the teachers and other employees routinely gave up raises in exchange for full benefits. This was given up when we went into state receivership. Our school district continues to be one of the lowest paid not only the SF Bay Area but in the state of California.

yeah, I'm so glad that I have all of this political clout so that I can continue to be paid this outrageous salary & continue to receive such a fabulous benefits package.

I'm in the same position as you are. The problem is that the Repubs LIE about all of this and people believe them. It's a scary world we live in right now.

I am so frustrated as to be nearly speechless...

It's a despairing situation--Republicans are absolutely masterful at using scare tactics and turning people that should be supporting each other against each other. This is middle-class people doing this to other middle-class people while the upper class laughs all the way to the bank.

I can't afford to ensure my family. The cost would be $950 a month. I make half as much as my sister and her husband do (both of whom got business degrees and don't have a masters).

I've never claimed that I deserve the same pay as them. I have, however, claimed that I am barely making a living wage and I'm insulted by the notion that I'm a drain on the system.

I so agree with you!! I live in Maine and our classy governor, who is also a business man, has decided to increase the percentage that state employees must pay to their retirement fund. Why's this? Because other politicians in the past had dipped into our fund, robbing Peter to pay Paul. Now that's apparently our fault. Therefore, we must pay! The funny thing is our esteemed governor has decided that he must exempt himself from having to pay an increase because, well, he can! If it weren't for politics, my job would be perfect!
