when I strongly feel that parenting a twenty year old is way harder than parenting a toddler.
She wears me out.
I'm glad she's home, but seriously, when is she going to stop repeating the same patterns as before?
My biggest fear is that she will never have the ability to leave.

This can be tough. Parents and children often get into a dance--each one repeats the same steps.
Have you thought about consulting a therapist so you can figure out how you want to react to her actions? I think sometimes having someone on the outside is invaluable.
Part of what makes this so tough is that my kids are so young and I know there are so many factors that will influence them: society at large, school, peer group, personal temperament (which I think is way more powerful than people assume), dating relationships, etc.
I can't imagine how hard this is and I appreciate the way you can be honest and vulnerable on your blog.
I'm sure that if my mother were to read your post, she would say that things do get better...just don't give up...with love and support and strong guidance and again with the love....it all works out (and then your daughter moves to Japan, but, that's still not a bad thing!).
Jenn has a good point...while you are waiting for your daughter to get her stuff figured out, getting yourself a little bit of extra help with dealing with it might not be such a bad idea...you do what you have to do to make YOU feel right.
It's way harder! I have a 23 year and a 19 year old--give me a toddler any day!!
