Just Call Me Crabby

I went to my first crab feed last night. It was put on my the local unions in the city where I teach. Great fun was had by all and the room where I sat with my union president was by far the most fun. No, I was not dancing on the tables. I did eat way more than I should have, especially after suffering from a stomach virus that swept through our house last week. (As a result of being sick, I missed two days last week, a day after starting my "Into Activity" for my literature unit on A Thousand Never Evers by Shana Burg.)

Speaking of not dancing on tables, on Friday, my GATE students and I went to our computer lab to do some work on ancient Egypt. While we were in there, one of my students asked me if I had a myspace page. I told them that I did, then another one asked me if I a Facebook page and I replied that I had one of those as well.

I heard quite a few of them gasp in disbelief. I told them, "just so you know, there is nothing on either my facebook or myspace page that can be used against me. I value teaching you guys way too much. Of course, I also don't want any of you to come up with anything that you can use to blackmail me."

I have both Facebook and MySpace (though I mostly use Facebook because it is a much more functional system). When my students find out, the look on their face is priceless.

Of course, I have a standard policy of not adding anyone to my list until after they graduate. The three exceptions I have are children of friends who no longer live near me. But in two of those cases I have their parents on my lists, and the other one just simply doesn't know what Facebook is and wouldn't care if he did. :)

My MySpace page has next to nothing on it. I even weeded out some friends because of their questionable profiles. I am totally paranoid about it. Facebook feels safer, though, since you have to friend them before they can see the profile. Which I don't.

Philosopher-Mom has posted some interesting stuff on teachers and social networking--though hers is geared toward college students.

I don't add students until they've graduated, and I usually tell them that by adding me I CAN SEE EVERYTHING THEY DO! : )

Ooh...crab fest. I had a hard time concentrating on the other stuff after that....you had me at Crab Fest. yummmmm...

I think that Facebook is good in that you don't have to "approve" of everyone...keeps it pretty safe, you know, just in case!!

I remember in So. Tex, if kids saw you at the grocery store or anywhere else, it was pretty much common knowledge the next day what you were buying....when I saw some of my boys in the store, I always went for the "personal products" whether i needed them or now...those little beauties usually shut down the little busy-bodies!!!

Hope everyone is feeling better!!

I wondered about having my own Facebook page for a long time, but finally broke down & got one. I am on ULTIMATE privacy! Not that I'm doing anything untoward, but I still relish my privacy & don't want kids knowing every facet of my life. My policy is the same as many of yours - you must have graduated!
But speaking of privacy, how much liberty do we have as teachers? I saw a car in the faculty parking lot with a "F the President" sticker on it. Did he/she (I have no idea whose car it was) have the right - freedom of speech - to post that sticker? OR as teachers, are we supposed to hold the higher moral ground & avoid publicly advertising our opinions? I'm not talking politics here... I'm thinking of the "F" part. IS THAT APPROPRIATE????
