Say What?

One of the teachers in my school district was told by our superintendent yesterday that it shouldn't matter who is in the classroom that it all came down to good curriculum.

Bad teacher + good curriculum=students will learn

So, what do you think?

Obviously if you have bad curriculum, it will have a negative impact on what students learn. However, if you want the most bang for your buck, you had better have both a strong teacher + good curriculum.

At least I now have a better understanding what this superintendent thinks of teachers!

Bad superintendent + stupid comment = ugly situation

I would ask him where he gets his research. Citation please! Much of the research supports the exact opposite of his claim.

One more reason why supers (and most principals) should sub at least 2 days a month to remember what it is like to actually teach!!

What worries me is that theses guys really think like that. I'm betting in the next 10-20 years we either get back our profession or it becomes an hourly rate job like McDonalds with scripted EVERYthing like a Sylvan Learning or something. Scares me.

That's utter rubbish. No matter how good the curriculum is, nobody learns anything from a bad teacher.

Here's what I wonder; how quick would the people who are making these policy decisions feel if THEY were compelled to abide by those policies, too? I ask this about the folks who are claiming that civil unions are sufficient; let's call THEIR marriage a civil union - with ONLY the rights and privileges that come with civil unions - and see how THEY like it.

Gah.

Any idiot can bugger up good curriculum.

And as Head Monkey said, Citation please!

When I get around to blogging this I'll have some citations proving Superintendent wrong -- epic fail wrong.

The opposite -- that excellent teaching can compensate for weak curricula -- may be the case.

"Just because our curriculum is standardized doesn't mean our students are." THAT's what it boils down to. His making that comment is like saying if people have good parenting books in their home their kids will turn out great.
Ugh.

That is crazy. Just crazy.

Thank goodness our superintendent doesn't think that way. There are facts and knowledge and truth. Then there is just silly opinion based on a "feeling." His comment is at best "truthiness" at worst "ignorant."

Research supports that the #1 determination of classroom success is the teacher.

How does a super. think this way? Also, what about the influence of good kids, parents, and communities?

okay, I know I'm late on this. But, your Supe is so very wrong. A good curriculum can't support a bad teacher. However, a good teacher can create learning out of a bad curriculum. However, the most learning occurs when you have both!

Laughing at Dr. Pezz's comment!

We have "Everyday Mathematics" in our district, yet many students still seem to fare well. *Most* of the teachers do a very good job with the students there.

(The ones that don't are why we're homeschooling LOL!)

My older sons were able to do well with this curriculum even though most math teachers *hate* it.

So... when is your superintendent leaving? :]
